What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is an inflammation or infection of the sinuses, the open spaces within the facial bones. When the sinus membranes become irritated, they swell, trapping air and secretions. The accumulating fluid may worsen viral symptoms and feed bacteria, which leads to infection. A deviated septum or other obstruction of the nose, such as nasal polyps or tumors, also may trap fluid in the sinus.

Symptoms of Sinusitis?
Sinusitis symptoms include fever, chills, frontal headache, and nasal congestion with thick discharge, as well as pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness over the affected sinuses. There may also be nosebleed, sore throat, and bad breath.   May also cause earaches or toothache.

Sinusitis is increased in people with allergies such as hay fever or esophageal reflux. Airborne irritants, such as air pollution and cigarette smoke, also can injure the sinus linings. Sometimes swimming or immersing the head in water may allow bacteria-laden water to enter the sinuses. Chronic, hard-to-treat sinusitis sometimes results from chronic sinus irritation caused by the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. Dental complications, viral infection, small growths in the nose, injury to the nasal bones, smoking, and cystic fibrosis also may trigger sinusitis.
